![]() Over the years, REAP funding to Mines of Spain has contributed to trail development, erosion control and more. Backbone consists of 2,001 acres and is heavily wooded with a variety of tree species, predominantly oak and maple. It was Iowa's first state park and remains one of the most geologically unique. The park is a gem for photographers, hikers and anyone who loves the great outdoors. Backbone State Park was dedicated in 1920. Along the way, visitors will find Indian mounds, 250-year-old bur oak trees, lead mine pits and the remnants of an 1859 farm. The 1,387-acre site boasts 21 miles of hiking trails and 5 miles of ski trails. Heavily forested and with a variety of rocky outcrops, there's a wealth of natural beauty on offer for adventurous families visiting Backbone State Park, plus a number of exciting activities that take advantage of the park's natural terrain.
